Study in India
The home of Iyengar yoga is in Pune, in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Experienced students travel there from all over the world, to learn first-hand from B.K.S. Iyengar and his family.
Founded in 1975, the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute is dedicated to Mr Iyengar’s late wife, and most instruction nowadays is by their children, Geeta and Prashant.
The RIMYI has a library with thousands of books on yoga practice and philosophy, human anatomy and physiology, traditional Indian medicine and modern science. All classes are in English, and they teach both “the essence of yoga” and “values of life”.
To attend, you need to have been practising Iyengar yoga for at least eight years, including inverted poses. Your regular teacher will have to certify your application. The Iyengar Yoga Association handles all applications from the UK. It is not possible to apply directly to Pune, nor can the Institute in London process applications.
